Discovery Learning

About Us

Our STEM Discovery's mission is to inspire youth through participating in hands-on activities in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.). Our STEM Club provides learning experiences through fun and engaging programming that encourages children and young adults (teens) to explore their sense of wonder. Children and teens are introduced to engaging activities that promote discovery, reward curiosity, and stimulate a passion for deeper connections.

We believe that ...

Why is STEM important? What is all the "buzz" about?

STEM is important because it teaches critical thinking skills and instills a passion for innovation. Beyond the benefit of learning science, technology, engineering, and math, STEM assists in problem-solving and exploratory learning that fuel future success across a variety of tasks and discipline areas.

Why should you consider a STEM camp or club? How is it different from STEM classes during the year?

It is important to note that both STEM summer camps, clubs during breaks, and/or STEM courses throughout the school year strive to teach hard skills for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and math in fun and engaging ways. But with eLearning on the rise, many parents are left wondering how an enrichment program might be different from something like distance learning, especially those where kids are learning in groups with other students. Undeniably online and e-learning options provide students with a much broader variety of course options, but the reality is that often these classes tend to be very large.  As a result, due to the sheer volume of students, teachers have no choice but to minimize the interaction and participation of the students to control the chaos. With clubs, summer camps, and other enrichment options, the student-to-instructor ratios are much lower, creating an ideal environment to encourage active participation. This is even more important for learners with unique learning needs.  Camps and clubs create the perfect blend of small-group collaboration and individualization—allowing for everyone's voice to be heard.

What are the benefits of STEM camps for younger, elementary-level students?

Young kids are naturally curious and born ready to explore! Depending on the feedback a student receives toward their inquisitiveness, the seeds of that natural curiosity either continue to grow - never reaching a maximum capacity or are smothered by building barriers even before real barriers or challenges begin to present themselves.

What are the benefits of STEM camps for middle school-aged students?

Growing up in an increasingly technology-driven age has resulted in heightened interest in the STEM field for many (pre) teens.  The good news is that there is an abundance of information, videos, and tutorials that students can navigate themselves. The challenge is the lack of social engagement that may stem from self-driven courses and activities. Without a doubt, summer camp fills that gap and provides a social aspect, allowing students to pair up with other like-minded peers and form weeklong, and possibly life-long friendships.

What are the benefits of STEM camps for high school students?

Skill-Building Toward the Future

Skill building and career opportunities are the first two benefits that come to mind.  There is a clear misconception that STEM is all about people walking around labs in white lab coats conducting experiments. While that is a huge part of the STEM field, it is a whole lot more than that! Interestingly, many people are unaware that the act of coding goes well beyond keying repetitive numbers behind a computer screen. Did you know that STEM is a major part of sports, music, and other forms of entertainment? Most people are aware that it is very much embedded in gaming and social media but most people do not easily see it in other areas, which means that it is that much more important to show students the career possibilities -- beyond gaming.

Making Career Connections

Often kids, especially high school students, do not see the connection between the academic subjects in schools and career skills. We want to make those connections for them so they invest more and truly pick a profession that will make them genuinely happy because it is no secret that STEM jobs pay well!

STEM Camp Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to questions you may have. If you don't find the answer to your question, we're here to help:

General Information

What ages can come to STEM Camp?

Children between the ages of 5-13 are eligible to enroll.  Based on the activities and overall structure of the camp, campers must be at least 5 years old by July 1, 2024.

What is your policy for children with special needs?

This is a fully inclusive program. Children of all abilities are invited to our camp.  The suitability of the camp will vary based on the individual child's needs and abilities.  The staff is qualified to work with students of all abilities. However, due to limitations in staffing numbers, in some extreme circumstances, we are not able to maintain campers who exhibit extremely disruptive behavior and we are unfortunately limited by staff availability  (in quantity).

What are the locations of the camp for the summer of 2024?

Currently, we are scheduled to use the Charles County Public Library. However, depending on the number who enroll in the camp, the location is subject to change. Attendees will be notified, but if the location changes, it will remain in the Charles County area.

Are all your locations air-conditioned?

All the locations being considered for the Summer program will be air-conditioned.

How do I register for camp?

This information will be available soon.
