This year we have partnered with Homeschool Community Connection and expanded our
course offerings for students!
"I never teach my pupils, I only provide the conditions in which they can learn."
-A Einstein
Do you need support igniting that passion for learning in your teen? Do you have a teen who learns a bit differently than everyone else?
If you answered "yes" to any of those questions and you believe your child/teen would benefit from a safe learning space that encourages interdisciplinary connections with ongoing collaboration and high-quality instruction, EFM and HSCC have "put our heads together" and we may be offering a program that is the perfect fit for your (pre)teen!
What is it and what is included?
A series of math classes to support middle and high school-level students are being offered in response to increasing needs in the community. The overarching goal of these multi-level courses is to build solid mathematical foundations in math through the exploration of the fundamentals of arithmetic to high-level math.
High-quality core math instruction is the foundation of any successful multi-level math class. A tiered system of support framework will be implemented into all courses to accommodate the different levels of learning. Because the Math programs offered are multi-level, teaching math concepts will be the focus, as opposed to working through a single textbook. The instructors will assemble and customize a learning plan based on the learning needs of the group. Each student will be expected to purchase a source text (i.e., math textbook) and work through weekly assigned lessons. Supplemental or alternative assignments may be provided within the course, depending on the course.
How much does it cost?
The cost of the course offering varies depending on the program(s) selected. For more information about the specific programs offered, click on the program of interest below.
*Note: If you select a course that meets twice a week, a syllabus and course outline will be provided upon registration and payment for the class. However, please note that the pacing and content for the courses may authentically change depending on the grouping and the needs of the students.
Would your child benefit from a math group with their peers, or in a space with a live instructor?
How are the students grouped?
The intermediate grades serve as the formative years for conceptual understanding of content as well as an emotional connection to math. This is typically the point where students decide if they love (or hate) math; during this stage, they learn key concepts that will carry them throughout their entire math careers. The bottom line is that the stronger the conceptual understanding of key skills and concepts at this point such as fractions, mathematical representations, functions, and problem-solving, the more they are set up for success in future endeavors. Pre-Algebra & Algebra 1 skills, which are skills typically taught during the 6th-9th grade will be taught in the Intermediate groups and Algebra II and Precalculus concepts will be introduced in the Advanced group. A comparison outline of the learning units by grade level is provided below.
What topics are covered?
Each course is authentically designed for students with varying abilities. While you can find the specific topics below, all of the courses are designed to focus on 5 key areas:
Conceptual Understanding
Making Connections
Procedural Fluency
Mathematical Modeling
Adaptive Reasoning
Each session for the Intermediate and Advanced groups will last 60-75 minutes, depending on the topic covered. It will include a 15–20-minute, whole-group instructional component and guided independent practice, alone or in groups, to ensure mastery of the concept(s) learned.
Selecting a Math Curriculum ...
Every learner signed up for a math class needs to purchase a source text (textbook), but you need to decide the best fit for your learner. One of the most crucial aspects of homeschooling is the selection of an appropriate math curriculum that can accommodate your child/teen's unique learning needs. Good news! Below, you will find some of the top math curriculums with comprehensive descriptions to alleviate some of the burdens of your selection for your learner. If you need more help matching a curriculum to your learner's unique learning needs, reach out to us via email, set up an appointment, and we will be happy to help.

Supplemental Materials Recommended
We all have those lessons with complicated multiplication and division, but the skill being learned has nothing to do with that specific skill, so be sure to purchase a scientific calculator -- a preferred one of many is the TI-30xa Scientific Calculator.
A ruler is a must-have for connecting two points on a graph, especially if you are a perfectionist :-) Translucent rulers are the best so students can see exactly what they are doing.
Optional The Stamp is especially helpful in the upper middle school grades. If a student needs to sketch a coordinate plane, they can whip out the stamp, and they have a perfect graph.
Additional digital and supplemental materials, including videos, Guided notes, handouts, and supplemental materials will be provided to your student in the Google Classroom.
Algebra 1 Students (8th /9th grade)
